Teeth Night Guard
There are certain instances where a teeth night guard may be desirable or even necessary. Before you run out and buy one from the pharmacy, the first thing you should do is evaluate your issues. Has your sleeping partner informed you that you grind your teeth at night? Are you waking up with headaches or a sore jaw? These may be telltale signs of bruxism, a condition of grinding and clenching the teeth that usually occurs at night. If you think you have a mild to moderate problem of this nature, then a night guard is worth your consideration.
When selecting a nighttime teeth guard there are some things to think about. Do you want a dentist to create your guard or would you rather try a drugstore brand? Dental guards are more expensive but they are of the best quality. Your dentist will take a mold of your mouth, then use it to craft a customized mouth guard that addresses your particular problems. For example, someone who snores may require a different kind of guard than someone with bruxism. Your dentist will determine the type of guard that is best for you.
Drugstore brand teeth guards can be bought many places, including pharmacies, discount department stores and basically anywhere that sells tooth care items. They are usually the boil and bite variety, which means you immerse the guard in boiling water then fit it in your mouth and bite down. This helps mold the guard to your mouth properly. These types of mouth guards cost anywhere from $10 to $50 depending on the brand. Make sure you read the instructions in detail before using the guard to make sure you fit it correctly.
Using a teeth night guard can head off TMJ problems before they become unbearable. The temporomandibular joint is in the jaw area and plays a large role in the opening and closing of the mouth. Some people with severe TMJ dysfunction have trouble doing this and find their jaw locks. Others experience moderate to severe pain in their face, head, neck and shoulders. To prevent this any sort of bruxism issue should be addressed right away because early detection is key to avoiding more serious problems in the future.
