They come in three basic types: pre-made, boil and bite and customized. The right guard for you depends on your particular needs.


Pre-made mouth guards, also called stock mouth guards, are ready to be put in your mouth as soon as they are removed from the package and sanitized properly. While these guards are cheap and easy to find in most sporting goods stores, they are not usually your best bet. You may want to try one that you think is the right size and see if it fits. The boil and bite mouth guards can be found for both athletics and teeth grinding. These mouth guards provide a better fit than the pre-made ones because they mold to the shape of your teeth. While each package will have its own set of detailed instructions, basically you will just boil the mouth guard for the allotted time, let it cool a few seconds then place it in your mouth and fit it to your teeth while gently biting down. With these mouth guards it is important not to bite too hard because then there may be holes in the guard.

The third type of teeth mouth guards are the ones made by your dentist. When you go in for your dental exam your dentist will create a mold of your teeth. This mold will be used to create a customized dental protector for your particular needs. Dentists can make athletic mouth protectors as well as those that prevent nighttime bruxism. Usually the guard will take some time to craft, it will not be available the same day the mold is taken. Now that you know more about the different types of mouth guards you can decide which you'd like to try for yourself.
