Sports Mouth Guard
If you or your child participate in athletics it may be necessary to get a sports mouth guard. This is a protective device worn over top of the teeth to protect them. These guards are very important for participants in any sport where they may get hit in the mouth by a ball or other piece of equipment, fall on the ground or receive a blow to the face by another participant whether accidental or not. So, this covers boxing, martial arts, football, baseball, hockey, soccer, skateboarding and even mountain biking. This is a partial though not complete list of sports that may require a mouth protector.
There are guards for athletes who do not wear braces and guards for athletes who do. Guards for braces can be found from a variety of manufacturers, one of them being Shock Doctor. It is important that guards for braces offer extra protection so the metal does not cause lacerations to the mouth upon impact. Whether you wear braces or not there are three main types of guards. The first is the most simple, a guard that is already formed and ready to wear. While cost efficient, these guards aren't usually recommended because they don't always fit like they should.
The second type of mouth guard to consider is called a boil and bite mouth guard. By far the most popular type of athletic mouth guard, the boil and bite mouth guard conforms to the size and shape of your teeth because it is pliable. These guards are placed in boiling water then when they are malleable you put them in your mouth and fit them properly. Every boil and bite mouth guard will come with detailed instructions regarding how to properly fit and care for the guard. You can buy these guards in pharmacies, discount department stores and sporting goods stores.
For those who want the maximum in oral protection consider a dental sports mouth guard. These guards do involve a trip to the dentist and cost substantially more than the stock and boil and bite guards but are also of higher quality. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth and create a customized guard using the mold. For serious athletes, the dental mouth protector is probably the way to go. No matter what kind of guard you choose consider replacing it after each sports season so it does not get worn and lose effectiveness.
