Mouth Guard For Braces

For kids, teens and adults who wear braces, it is imperative to buy a special mouth guard for braces if participating in any sporting events. While all athletes should wear a mouth guard, it is even more important for those who wear braces to do so. If you receive an impact to the mouth from a blow or from a fall, you could not only lose teeth but damage your orthodontic device. Not only that, but the metal braces could cause severe lacerations to the mouth.


Luckily there are quite a few manufacturers who offer sports mouth guards for those who wear braces. It comes in both Youth and Adult sizes, and can be purchased with or without a strap. Straps add stability and prevent the mouth guard from getting knocked out but some people prefer a strapless guard.

It features an Ortho-Channel that is especially made to fit over the braces and protect the mouth from cuts and lacerations from the braces. That's all there is to it, and when your braces are adjusted the mouth guard adjusts with them.

If you are not an athlete but suffer from a condition called bruxism, more commonly known as teeth grinding, your dentist may decide to fit you with a mouth guard for braces made for this issue. In many cases bruxism guards are worn only at night because this is when most people are grinding their teeth. Do not attempt to wear an athletic mouthpiece for this purpose, instead have your dentist design a guard just for you, especially if you wear braces. Bruxism can cause problems if left untreated but usually a guard or splint worn overnight can correct the problem over time.
